Stephanie Ben-Ishai

Distinguished Research Professor and Full Professor at Osgood Hall Law School, where she engages in research and teaching on contract, commercial law, and financial crises.

Associate Professor at the University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of Philosophy, where he works in the philosophy of cognitive science.

Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce. Prior to starting at UVA, she was a postdoctoral researcher in household finance at the NBER. She received her PhD in finance from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

Is my data secure?

The researchers have a number of data security protocols in place to prevent data breaches and to ensure that only the research team is able to view this data, which will be stripped of personal identifiable information. The licensed insolvency trustee is under professional obligations to protect your data. Your data will be safely stored in an encrypted and password protected database that only the research team will have access to. Your data will be stored for three years and then will be securely archived. Confidentiality will be provided to the fullest extent possible by law. Has this study received the appropriate ethics approvals?

Yes. This research has been approval by the Human Participants Review Sub-Committee, York University’s Ethics Review Board, and conforms to the standards of the Canadian Tri-Council Research Ethics guidelines.

How will participating in this study help me?

If you are eligible for the study, your filing fees could be subsidized by up to 80%. Whether you are eligible for the study or not, you will still be connected with an LIT who will give you a free consultation and can offer you advice and assistance with debt relief.

What is a LIT?

A Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) is a licensed professional who can provide advice and assistance to individuals with debt. LITs are the only professionals who are authorized to administer insolvency proceedings like bankruptcy or consumer proposals.

How long will the process take?

The eligibility check will only take one minute to complete! If you are eligible, you will be directed to an initial questionnaire that will take less than 15 minutes to complete. A link to the initial questionnaire will also be sent to your email in case you need to complete it later. A research associate will reach out to you to schedule a free phone consultation (approximately 30 minutes) with the LIT within two business days of your submission.

How should I prepare for the process?

If you are eligible, you will be contacted via the email address and phone number you provide, so make sure to keep an eye on your email inbox and messages!

You may want to prepare in advance any questions or concerns you want to discuss with the LIT during your free consultation.

Is the initial consultation free?

Yes! The trustee will meet with you for an initial consultation to go over your debt relief options with you and answer any questions you have.

If I participate in the study, do I have to file for bankruptcy or use this trustee?

No. You do not have to file or, if you choose to file, you do not have to file with the LIT.
